PHLEBOTOMY SPECIALIZATION Phlebotomy is the science of collection blood samples to be used in patient lab analysis. Amongst the skills gained in this program are: microscopic lab analysis, obtaining an EKG, taking vital signs, and urinalysis. The program provides specialized training that qualifies students for various careers in medical offices, clinics, blood banks, and laboratories. This program will prepare students for the Phlebotomy Certification Exam. Individuals who have successfully completed COT’s Medical Office Assistant program or a similar program from another accredited college are eligible for enrollment. Individuals with relevant work and/or academic experience may also apply for admission to this program, based on a determination by the Admissions Review Committee. The Phlebotomy Specialization program trains students in the techniques and procedures of phlebotomy, microscopic lab analysis, understanding safety and universal precautions, and record keeping and documentation. Performing CPR and obtaining EKGs will also be covered. Students earning this certificate may qualify as phlebotomists and for a variety of positions in medical offices, clinics, blood banks, and laboratories. Phlebotomy Specialization Certificate of Achievement To receive a Certificate of Achievement in Phlebotomy Specialization, a student must successfully complete (D or better) 9 credit hours of the core curriculum courses and have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better.
