The Nursing Care Technician Program at the College of Office Technology prepares students for careers as valuable and highly-skilled members of the nursing community. Skills acquired in the Nursing Care Program include Basic Nursing Assistant Training, Phlebotomy, EKG Technician, and CPR. Graduates from this program, upon meeting certification requirements, will be qualified for positions in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, as well as in the home health care setting. This program also serves as the crucial first step along the way to becoming a Licensed Professional Nurse (LPN) or a Registered Nurse (RN). A career in the nursing field can be yours in just months of training.

Nursing Assistants help care for physically ill, injured, disabled, or infirm individuals confined to hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and personal care/long-term care facilities under the supervision of nursing and medical staffs.

The objective of the Nursing Care Technician Program is to provide graduates with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to secure entry level positions as Nursing Assistants, Orderlies, Nursing Aides, Patient Care Assistants, Patient Care Technicians, EKG/ECG Aides, and Phlebotomists.

The Nursing Care Technician Program covers a wide range of direct patient care skills, including personal care, safety, infection control, and lifting and moving patients. It also covers communication skills, patients’ rights, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology. In addition, students will learn to perform venipuncture, monitor EKGs and blood glucose, take vital signs, perform catheter insertion and CPR, and various other skills necessary to care for patients in acute, subacute, and long-term care facilities.

Training consists of classroom instruction, laboratory experience, and hands-on training through a mandatory 40 hour externship in a medical facility.

Nursing Care Technician Certificate of Achievement.
(42 credit hours)

To receive a Certificate of Achievement in Nursing Care Technician Specialization, a student must successfully complete (D or better) 42 credit hours of the core curriculum courses and have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better.
